Not every lottery is legitimate. Here are three red flags indicative of a lottery scam.
Red Flag #1: Unnecessary & Unusual Payment and Fees
If you are asked to pay to increase your chances of winning or to claim a prize, consider this a huge red flag. Scammers often pressure you to pay before receiving anything. So if you receive a fake check, false promises of payment, or a payout larger than your win, this is a glaring sign. In these situations, paying something means you only lose and gain nothing.
Red Flag #2: Pressure to Respond Immediately
Legitimate sweepstakes and lotteries will give you plenty of time to claim your prize. Pressure to respond quickly is a very common sign of a scam. If an offer seems rushed, it will be harder to use sound judgement and is likely meant to benefit the scammer, not you.
Red Flag #3: Poorly Written Communication
Another glaring indicator is if the notice you receive is unprofessional and poorly-written. Legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes will undergo a better review process for better communication.
